Evidence have been found by archaeologists that point to Iran and Georgia being the areas for the earliest wine making happening in about 6000 to 5000 BC. Then in the medieval times in Europe, the Christian Church started to back the use of wine for communion in the Catholic Mass. Other cultures such as Islam did not condone such use of wine. The Muslim chemists among others paved the way in distilling the wine for purposes that were medicinal in nature. The consuming wine became highly popular in the 15th century where it survived the Phylloxera louse that caused quite a bit of devastation in the 1870s. All this led to major growing areas for the grapes throughout our modern world.
