With so many vehicles in San Diego, it is amazing there aren’t more roadside diners. Diner food is both excellent and provides a wonderful atmosphere in which to enjoy your food. At a diner, you can get breakfast all day and the best comfort food around. However, San Diego does have a few true diner experiences that are well worth your visit.

First, there is the Chicken Pie Shop, which is possibly the best diner in San Diego. Located in North Park, this diner offers you the best cheap and delicious comfort food. This diner is best known for their chicken pies, which you can’t get better anywhere else. The service is fast and excellent.

Next, is Studio Diner where you get the complete diner experience with steel and chrome design and large bay windows. This true roadside diner is located off the beaten path near the Stu Segall studios. The Studio Diner is made with a movie studio theme, providing a sleek and slightly upscale design. Here you get the best of comfort food with a slight twist to give you the most delicious experience you’ve ever had.

Third on the list is Rudford’s. With bay windows and mid-century signage, you feel like you are stepping back in time when visiting this diner. This restaurant is a San Diego landmark just down the street from the Chicken Pie Shop and offers the basic comfort food. The best part is this diner is open 24 hours so you can get your favorite comfort food whenever you have a craving.

Then there is Perry’s Cafe located just after Old Town right near the I-5/8 interchange. This Cafe is similar to a trucker’s diner. Here you can get a hearty meal that will last you all day long and for breakfast, they offer the best pancakes in the San Diego area.

Fifth, is Brian’s American Eatery in what used to be an old Denny’s. You will find this restaurant along the busy West Washington Street in the Hillcrest section of San Diego. Here you get the classic comfort food in a nice refurbished setting that features booths and counters. The best thing about this restaurant is the heaping portions of food that you get for a reasonable price.

Another excellent spot is D.Z. Akin’s Deli and Bakery. Here you will be able to enjoy an authentic Jewish deli. While it isn’t exactly a diner it offers you the best in sandwiches, meals, breakfast and baked goods. Pretty much anything you want is on the menu and it can take you awhile to read everything on the menu and decide exactly what you want.

Alternatively, try Crest Cafe, which is located within the heart of Hillcrest. This restaurant is a local favorite and one of the best-kept secrets in San Diego. Here you get friendly service, wonderful food and the right portions. When you want the finest in comfort food, you need to head to Crest Cafe.
