To Slather, Pour, Or Brush On Your Barbecue Sauce

No matter how you like to apply your barbecue sauce, or how experienced or not you are, everyone can enjoy the grilling experience. Brushing, slathering, or pouring it on is all just fine as long as you are happy with the results of your work. Just be prepared for the clean up if you are too messy with the sauce.

There is an age-old question in the world of grilling on how to apply your barbecue sauce. Techniques and degrees of skill are definitely a factor, and experience lends itself to the argument as well, but ultimately the answers are simple. The second question is when to apply your sauces, which again lends to skill levels and understanding what type of grilling you are doing. Slow cooking, dry rubs, and regional styles such as Kansas City or Memphis, Texas style, or are you a Carolina guy, will all determine when, how, and why you do what you do.

Some folks like to lightly brush their meat with their grilling sauce. This is fine if you are someone who wants only a hint of the sauce flavor, and want more pure meat taste. Or you are a neat freak who is worried about cleaning the grill, and your clothes later.

There is the group that loves to just pour their barbecue sauce all over everything, which includes the food, the grill, even the ground. Hell, just dump it on! Often this is the beginner group of grill masters, but the one thing that is for sure is that the food will have a lot of flavor!

The slathering group is probably the biggest collective group of grillers since the most popular style of barbecue sauce in the country is the Kansas City varieties. This type of sauce is meant to be put on thick, late in cooking, and makes for a messy meal as well. Make sure if you are a slatherer that you have enough napkins for everyone, or even some bibs. Ribs are the best for slathering, and even sometimes pouring of sauce since you have such a big area to cover. Trying to lightly brush sauce on full racks of ribs might take a long time.

However you like to apply your barbecue sauce, hopefully the most important thing is that you enjoy how the food turns out, and your guests approve of your methods. The great thing about taking part in the grilling experience is that you can become as much of an expert as you want, or remain a rank amateur and still have a great time doing it. There is no need to go to culinary school to learn how to grill, nor do you have to have large sums of money to get started. All you need is just a little barbecue or even a hibachi, and some charcoal. Oh Yeah, don’t forget the sauce too!
