An Introduction to the Windy City

Chicago is a historic part of the United States. From trading post to classic big city, Chicago has become a destination city.

With over 2.8 million people living within its boundaries, Chicago is the third most populated city in the United States of America. It is the gem of the Midwest. When travelling outside of America, people of different nationalities may respond to hearing the name of this famous city by creating guns with their hands and saying, “Chicago. Boom boom.” Commonly known as the Windy City, Chicago has a great history and has grown into a beautiful and bustling city that is a must-see destination for Americans and foreigners alike.

In the mid eighteenth century, the area now known as Chicago was inhabited by the Potawatomis Indians, after trading hands between several other Indian tribes previously. In the 1770s, Jean Baptiste Pointe du Sable came to the Chicago area, married a Potawatomis woman, and set up the first trading post for the area. In 1833 the Potawatomis were forced from their land thanks to the Treaty of Chicago and shortly after the city of Chicago was established with a population of about two hundred people. The name for the city is a French interpretation of a Native American word, shikaakwa, which means wild onion or wild garlic.

Almost a century later, in the 1920s, Chicago was infamous for its gangsters who flourished due to Prohibition. The notorious Al Capone ravaged the city, bootlegging and smuggling liquor and battled law enforcement and other gangs in order to be the top dog in Chicago. This is where the conception of Chicago-boom-boom was born.

Today, Chicago, as one of the destination cities of the world, has an active and vivacious entertainment scene and nightlife. With so many people of different nationalities, you can have any sort of experience you want. There is Chinatown, Mexican villages with fine restaurants, Little Seoul that reeks of kimchi, Little Italy and many more. The city is rich in the arts with orchestras, theatre groups, dance companies, art museums, and plenty of opportunities to hear live jazz music. If you’re looking for sports bars Chicago has some with unique stylistic themes, sports events to go to and watch, and even sports to participate in.
